Kundali
A Kundali is your Vedic birth chart, a map of where every planet was positioned at your exact time and place of birth. It is used to understand personality, timing, recurring life patterns, and karmic tendencies. Also called a birth chart or natal chart.
Birth chart, Janam Kundali, natal chart
Lagna
Lagna is the ascendant, the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. It defines the first house of the chart and is considered the most personally significant point in the entire birth chart, shaping physical appearance, personality, and life outlook.
Ascendant, rising sign
Graha
Graha means planet in Sanskrit. Vedic astrology uses 9 Grahas: Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu (north lunar node), and Ketu (south lunar node). Each Graha governs specific areas of life.
Planet, celestial body
Rashi
Rashi means zodiac sign. There are 12 Rashis in Vedic astrology, corresponding to the 12 equal 30° divisions of the ecliptic. Unlike Western zodiac signs, Vedic Rashis are mapped to actual astronomical constellations (sidereal zodiac), not fixed seasonal points.
Zodiac sign, sign
Nakshatra
A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, divisions of the sky each spanning 13°20'. The Moon's placement in a specific Nakshatra at birth is a foundational element of Vedic astrology, influencing personality traits, emotional nature, and karmic patterns more precisely than the Sun sign.
Lunar mansion, star
Bhava
Bhava means house in Sanskrit. A birth chart has 12 Bhavas, each governing a specific area of life: 1st = self and body, 2nd = wealth and family, 3rd = siblings and courage, 4th = home and mother, 5th = children and creativity, 6th = enemies and health, 7th = marriage and partners, 8th = transformation and death, 9th = dharma and fortune, 10th = career and status, 11th = gains and network, 12th = loss and liberation.
House, Ghar
Rahu & Ketu
Rahu (north lunar node) and Ketu (south lunar node) are the two mathematical points where the Moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic. They are not physical planets but are treated as Grahas in Vedic astrology due to their powerful karmic significance. Rahu represents worldly desire and future karma; Ketu represents past-life experience and spiritual liberation.
Lunar nodes, Dragon's head and tail, shadow planets
समय
Hora
Hora refers to planetary hours: the day from sunrise to sunset is divided into 12 equal hours, and sunset to the next sunrise into another 12. Each hour is ruled by a specific planet in a fixed classical order. In Vedic astrology, timing important activities (like starting a business or signing a contract) during a favorable Hora is considered auspicious.
Planetary hour
Dasha
Dasha is a planetary time-period system unique to Vedic astrology. The most widely used is the Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year cycle divided into planetary periods (Mahadashas). The active planet strongly colors events and themes during its period. Each Mahadasha is subdivided into Antardashas (sub-periods) for finer analysis.
Planetary period, Mahadasha, Antardasha

Varga
Varga means a divisional chart, a chart mathematically derived from the main D1 (Rashi) birth chart by subdividing each sign into equal parts and remapping planetary positions. Vargas reveal details about specific life areas that the main chart doesn't show in isolation. Also called Amsha (portion/division).
Divisional chart, Amsha
D1 - Rashi Chart
The D1 is the primary birth chart, the foundation all other charts are derived from. It shows the overall picture of a person's life and is always calculated first. All divisional charts (D2 through D60) are mathematical transformations of the D1.
Birth chart, Rashi chart, Kundali
D9 - Navamsa
The D9 Navamsa chart divides each sign into 9 equal parts (3°20' each). It is considered the second most important chart after D1, used primarily for analyzing marriage, spouse characteristics, and overall dharma (life purpose). A planet strong in both D1 and D9 is considered very powerful.
Navamsa, 9th division chart, marriage chart
D10 - Dasamsa
The D10 Dasamsa divides each sign into 10 equal parts (3° each). It is specifically used for career, profession, authority, and public standing. When analyzing professional success or timing of career milestones, astrologers examine the D10 alongside the D1.
Dasamsa, career chart, 10th division chart
D60 - Shashtiamsa
The D60 Shashtiamsa divides each sign into 60 equal parts (30' each). It is considered the most subtle and important of all divisional charts for precise results, showing past-life karma and fine-grained life detail. Requires an accurate birth time (within 1-2 minutes) for meaningful results.
Shashtiamsa, karma chart, 60th division chart
D2 - Hora
The D2 Hora chart divides each sign into 2 parts (15° each). It is used specifically for analyzing wealth accumulation, financial resources, and material prosperity. Planets in the Sun's Hora indicate wealth through effort; planets in the Moon's Hora indicate inherited or natural wealth.
Hora chart, wealth chart
D3 - Drekkana
The D3 Drekkana divides each sign into 3 equal parts (10° each). It is used for analyzing siblings, co-born relationships, courage, short journeys, and general vitality.
Drekkana, sibling chart, 3rd division chart
D7 - Saptamsa
The D7 Saptamsa chart is specifically used for children: fertility, the number of children, and the nature of the relationship with them. Also relevant for grandchildren.
Saptamsa, children chart

Ayanamsa
Ayanamsa is the difference in degrees between the tropical zodiac (Western) and the sidereal zodiac (Vedic). Because the Earth's axis precesses slowly over time, the sidereal zodiac shifts relative to the tropical one. The Ayanamsa is subtracted from tropical longitudes to get sidereal positions. The most widely used value is Lahiri Ayanamsa (approximately 24° currently).
Sidereal correction, precession offset, Lahiri
Sidereal vs. Tropical
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which tracks planets against actual astronomical star constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons (vernal equinox = 0° Aries). Due to precession, the two zodiacs are currently about 24° apart, meaning your Vedic Sun sign is often different from your Western Sun sign.
Nirayana vs. Sayana
Guna Milan
Guna Milan (also called Ashtakoot matching) is the traditional Vedic compatibility scoring system used for marriage matching. It scores 8 categories (Koots) based on the Nakshatra positions of two individuals, for a maximum total of 36 points. A score above 18 is generally considered acceptable; above 24 is considered good.
Ashtakoot matching, kundali matching, horoscope matching
